14 — Thoughts + Lessons
Thoughts and lessons that I've been taught by 3 projects I'm currently juggling.
Installment 14 · Oct 19, 2022

Lately I’ve been overwhelmed with the day to day, work, and thankfully – multiple art projects that I’m currently working on.

The following is a collection of ideas. Or more importantly, thoughts and lessons that I've been taught by these projects I'm currently juggling.

  • It only works if you're OK with starting over.

  • Don't compromise quality in favor of being able to check it off of the list.

  • Knoll more.

  • "These projects are really getting in the way of me writing a newsletter."

  • There's no such thing as getting in the way of your own projects, only procrastination – period.

  • Plaster is not near as hard to clean up as I thought it would be.

  • Just because an idea seems complex does not mean it will take long to complete.

  • "Why haven't I been actively making things like this for the past year?"

  • Cheap ideas don't exist. It might not cost you a lot financially, but it will cost you time and energy. Decide which one you would rather have before getting into a project. If your answer is that you'd rather have time and energy, you don't love the idea enough.

  • "Ohhh, so THAT'S how Daniel Arsham does that."

  • Good sleep and a healthy morning routine make or break creative thought.

  • If you love an idea enough, it won't matter how many times you have to restart, revise, or continue putting in hours.

  • A good artist will have a perfectly balanced social life. A great artist will understand that sometimes you need to stay at home and keep going.

  • "4 breakfast tacos and a cortado every morning is a hard habit to break. I wish creative endeavors were this cemented into my day to day routine."

  • Simple ideas often take more effort that convoluted ones because it takes tactful and tasteful planning to make a whole train of thought translate as simple.

  • Call your loved ones or peers every single day. Fill them in on your projects. They'll give you amazing feedback, even if they aren't an artist.

  • Protect your ideas. Don't share what you were doing until after it's done. Once you tell someone what you're doing, you owe it to them to finish it.

  • A sauna is a great place to organize your thoughts.

  • LED tape can and will cut your fingers.

  • “Voice to text is one of Apple's best features.”

  • It is a blessing to have even one single creative thought on any given day.

  • ‘Content’ is not hard to produce if you're actually working hard.

  • I hate the word content.

  • Get your work into the hands of anyone that takes even the slightest bit of interest in it. You never know where it will end up or who that person will talk to.

  • Everyone understands themselves flawlessly but not everyone can correctly communicate what they mean. This is why ideas don’t land correctly.

  • My girlfriend Audra is more creative than most people I know and has remarkable taste.

  • Physical art will most likely outlive its creator by a long shot – this will frighten or encourage artists depending on how they view their own work.

  • Being excited about an idea does not mean you need to talk about it.

  • Gratitude is the key to being content with your projects. Your idea could have been given to anyone else, but it was given to you.

About

The Newsletter is a publication intended to inform and encourage deeper thought surrounding art, design, creativity, and day-to-day life. Written for (eventual) physical publishing in real time with weekly/bi-weekly installments.

It also allows me space to create something regularly without straining any creative muscle like a larger project normally would.

It serves everyone equally. It serves you images, thoughts, and information. It serves me a deadline and a creative outlet. And it serves your inbox another item to sort. The Newsletter is weekly and biweekly depending on what my schedule looks like.
