31 — Reality Bank
To keep ideas fresh, to create with integrity, and to do something that’s real.
Installment 31 · May 10, 2023

Recently, I've been workshopping a methodology or ‘modus operandi’ for discerning and organizing ideas and multiple projects at a time –

The concept is very straightforward. Within every creative mind exists a database in which ideas and passions are stored. And within that database exists a ‘reality bank’. Because our thoughts have innately been corrupted and tainted with cultural expectations, past failures, 'the world', and our own ideals… The reality bank is often overstocked, and the goods are on the same shelf in the vault with things that need to be thrown out to move forward and progress.

This concept is still a lot of jumbled up thoughts and bulleted points in my notebook but the overall meat is still there even though it's not ironed out. The reality bank is what's worth sharing. In its purest form, it’s a vault that contains our best ideas. Ideas that need to be kept safe and nourished at all times. Although I'm afraid that we've begun to assume that every thought we have and the modern age is a “vault idea” and this causes us to blur our own lines – lines that we’ve often worked hard to set in place.

To keep ideas fresh, to create with integrity, and to do something that’s real – our reality bank needs to fill up over time before we can cash out and have something worth presenting. Life needs to be lived in order for art to be birthed.

We often overshare, underdeliver, and burn out. In the words of one of my good friends whom I was just processing this with a few days ago at the time of writing this, "Some ideas are just meant to be had and executed for ourselves… Not everything is intended to be shown to the world"

When we share with someone an idea we've been given before we execute it, we’re making a promise to them to finish it, whether we realize it or not. In fact, several things happen when we share with ease – but if you want to be known as a completionist and a creator, sharing every idea before you act on it only hurts your reputation of following through.

Oversharing (within verbal or digital context) leads to mental and emotional strain or even worse – disconnecting from what you're putting out.

Allow the shelves within your reality bank to be fully stocked, overflowing even, before you open the vault and create from that place.

About

The Newsletter is a publication intended to inform and encourage deeper thought surrounding art, design, creativity, and day-to-day life. Written for (eventual) physical publishing in real time with weekly/bi-weekly installments.

It also allows me space to create something regularly without straining any creative muscle like a larger project normally would.

It serves everyone equally. It serves you images, thoughts, and information. It serves me a deadline and a creative outlet. And it serves your inbox another item to sort. The Newsletter is weekly and biweekly depending on what my schedule looks like.
